Background: Southern Power Distribution Company Ltd. (SPDCL) in State of Andhra Pradesh faced frequent power cuts due to falling trees, heavy winds, rains, or falling of objects, animals and birds on power supply lines. Power lines were getting snapped leading to power disruption for several hours. Challenge: The utility faced severe interrupting issues on their feeder and challenges of replacing power lines within a short duration for providing uninterrupted power supply for “Pushkar Festival “ Dismantling existing conductors and replacing with MVCC within short available shut down period on daily basis Maintaining safety measures during installation Approach: Raychem RPG followed a structured methodology for supply and Installation of MVCC Strong Service Team at site Effective supply chain management Air lifted MVCC from Sweden to reduce transit time Trained and developed local service contractors’ team Solution: Raychem RPG introduced a new technology for electricity lines called 'Covered Conductor'. Covered conductor use an insulating material as protection against accidental contact with other covered conductors or with grounded parts such as tree branches. This covering is sufficient for temporarily withstanding phase-to-earth voltage. The main objective was to improve reliability and reducing faults on low and medium tension lines, thus eliminating theft by direct tapping and preventing overloading of distribution transformers. Service team works continuously for 88 days to install and charge over 500 kms to ensure uninterrupted power supply during the world-famous festival. It built great confidence and the utility gave repeated orders for 3500 kms, over period of time. Benefits: Enhanced revenues through reduced faults and downtime caused by falling trees ROI within 2 years Reduced phase to phase clearance, making construction and right of way easier Reduced clearance from trees or buildings, making construction easier Reduced risk of forest fires, human tampering, faults due to animals Reduced maintenance cost Reduced risk of corrosion of internal conductors, human electrocution
